SMH welcomes new Family Physician to North Port

SARASOTA, Fla. – (Nov. 23, 2013) – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System welcomed a new family practice physician to North Port today. Leah Mugo, MD, joined the First Physician Group (FPG) practice in North Port, 2345 Bobcat Village Center Road, Suite 202, where she will join Internal Medicine & Pediatrics specialist Janet Lewis, MD.

Board certified in Family Medicine with a Fellowship in Pediatric Special Needs, Dr. Mugo came to Sarasota from Peoria, IL, where she spent the past several years as a practicing physician with Unity Point Clinic, formerly Methodist Medical Center of Illinois. She earned her medical degree at Purdue University in 2009 and completed her Family Medicine Residency at the Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, IL, in 2012. She also completed advanced training in the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs Fellowship, which focuses on research and treatment of medical issues in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and related chronic complex conditions. 

In addition to her busy practice, Dr. Mugo has served as a volunteer educator with the Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Program in Indianapolis, teaching 5th-8th graders about the physical risks associated with drug and alcohol use, and has served as a peer educator and volunteer HIV/AIDS counselor at Towson University and its health clinic. The North Port practice is part of First Physicians Group – a network of more than 100 primary and specialty care physicians employed by Sarasota Memorial to help fill the gaps caused by a shortage of primary care physicians in the region.
