Emergency Care Services
Our Emergency Care team is backed by the full resources of Sarasota Memorial Hospital, offering around-the-clock care by highly trained providers, including board-certified Emergency Care Center physicians and ER nurses with advanced certifications in trauma and emergency care. Sarasota Memorial's affiliation with John's Hopkins All Children's Hospitals also ensures 24/7 specialized emergency care for pediatric patients.
Sarasota Memorial Hospital's Emergency Care Center is one of just 19 ERs across the nation — and the only one in Florida — to earn the prestigious Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award (2018), which recognizes emergency departments that demonstrate excellent practice and innovative performance in leadership, education, advocacy and research.
Level II Trauma Center
As Sarasota County's only trauma center, Sarasota Memorial's team of highly specialized trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, subspecialists, trauma and intensive care nurses, and rehabilitation specialists stand ready 24/7 to deliver immediate life-saving care to people who suffer the most severe injuries in or near Sarasota County.
Obstetrical Emergencies
Sarasota Memorial hospitals are the only ones in the region with 24-hour emergency services dedicated to pregnant women: the Obstetrical Emergency Care Center (OB ECC). OB Hospitalists are available around-the-clock to examine patients, evaluate the progress of labor, check lab results, handle emergencies and provide a safe delivery for women who do not have their own physician or whose physician requests assistance. The Obstetrical ER, Triage and OB Hospitalist Service is located on the first floor of the SMH's main hospital, near the main Emergency Room.
Emergency vs. Urgent Care?
In a medical emergency, always call 911. For urgent, but not life-threatening conditions, Sarasota Memorial's six Urgent Care Centers (Sarasota, Bradenton and Venice) are open 8am-8pm daily. For guidance on whether to seek emergency care or urgent care, check out our "Know When To Go" symptom guide, or watch our "Urgent Care: Fast Facts" video series.
Comprehensive Stroke Center
Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital in the region designated by the State of Florida as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and nationally certified by DNV Healthcare to provide the most complex and advanced procedures to treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication.
DASH – Direct Angioplasty Saves Hearts
Choosing an ER with a hospital-based cath lab and world-class heart surgery program offers the best protection against potentially life-threatening delays in receiving advanced cardiac care. Our DASH (Direct Angioplasty Saves Hearts) program collaborates with 911 and first-responders to ensure that heart patients receive immediate and life-saving interventions upon arrival at SMH.
