Hyperbaric Medicine
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy — breathing 100% oxygen at a pressure greater than the surrounding atmosphere — helps accelerate healing by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels, tissue and bone cells.
At the Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Sarasota Campus, our Hyperbaric Medicine team uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy in treating a variety of medical conditions, including:
- Diabetic non-healing ulcer
- Osteomyelitis (refractory)
- Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis)
- Air or gas embolism
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Carbon monoxide poisoning complicated by cyanide poisoning
- Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis (gas gangrene)
- Crush injury, compartment syndrome and other acute traumatic Ischemia’s Decompression sickness
- Arterial insufficiencies, such as:
- Central retinal artery occlusion
- Severe anemia
- Intracranial abscess
- Necrotizing soft tissue infections
- Compromised grafts and flaps
- Acute thermal burn injury
- Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss
Led by Medical Director Peter Graper, MD, who's board certified in cardiac/thoracic surgery and undersea and hyperbaric medicine, the Hyperbaric Medicine Department has 2 climate-controlled hyperbaric chambers.
