Minimally Invasive & Robotic Surgical Procedures
Minimally invasive tools and techniques allow surgeons to perform many procedures through small, keyhole-size incisions that typically require only a stitch or two to close. For patients, this means a shorter hospital stay, a speedier recovery and getting back to their daily routine faster.
Our minimally invasive surgery team — the most experienced in the region — comprises more than 200 general and specialty surgeons, offering multidisciplinary expertise that ranges from cardiac surgery to urological, gynecological and surgical cancer procedures, as well as bloodless surgery options.
The benefits of minimally invasive and robotic surgery are significant:
- Reduced pain and trauma
- Fewer complications
- Reduced risk of infection
- Reduced risk of blood loss (fewer transfusions)
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities
Robotic Surgery at Sarasota Memorial
In the 1990s, Sarasota Memorial helped pioneer robotic surgery, participating in clinical trials that would shape the technology, protocols and surgeon training. In 2006, SMH became the first hospital in Florida to deploy the first commercially available da Vinci surgical robot. Today, our Robotic Surgery team is the region's most experienced and our Robotic Surgery program is the region's most comprehensive, delivering the greatest number of robotic specialties and the widest range of robotic procedures available.
Sarasota Memorial's Robotic Surgery program features:
From handling delicate heart/lung, esophageal and pancreatic cancer surgery to bariatric, gynecological and prostate cancer procedures to orthopedic, thoracic, gastrointestinal, general and bloodless surgery, our team is equipped with revolutionary tools that provide greater precision and optimal outcomes.
da Vinci Surgical Robotic Systems
Sarasota Memorial's surgical robot fleet includes four da Vinci Xi systems, the latest and most advanced available.
The da Vinci Xi systems are optimized for complex cancers, but our da Vinci-trained surgeons cover multiple specialties, including Bariatrics, Colorectal, General Surgery, Gynecology and GYN Oncology, Hepatobiliary/Gastrointestinal, Oncology, Thoracic and Urology.
The da Vinci system provides superior visualization, enhanced dexterity and greater precision for complex conditions. Its 3D cameras deliver magnification 10 times that of the naked eye, while its instruments offer articulation and range of motion that would be impossible with the human wrist.

ROSA, the Robotic Surgical Assistant
The ROSA Robotic Surgical Assistant is a minimally invasive device that enhances the safety and reliability of knee replacement surgery. ROSA provides our patients with better outcomes, a faster return to active life, and longer-lasting relief from debilitating joint pain caused by Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis and other knee disease.
ROSA’s innovative technology and specialized 3D-imaging software eliminate the guesswork for orthopedic surgery teams. Using the real-time, patient-specific data collected by ROSA, our specially trained surgeons create customized surgical plans and can precisely position new knees for optimized results.
For more information, help with an orthopedic surgery referral or to find out if ROSA-assisted knee surgery is right for you, call 941-917-7777.
Monarch Robotic Bronchoscopy
Sarasota Memorial Cancer Institute was among the first in the nation to deploy Auris Health's Monarch robotic-bronchoscopy platform. Used to navigate and biopsy the delicate far reaches of the lungs with optimized precision, the Monarch system enables earlier and more-accurate diagnosis of small and hard-to-reach lung nodules.
Monarch's advanced technology integrates the latest advances in flexible robotics, software, data science and endoscopy to provide improved diagnostic and treatment techniques for lung cancer and other lung disease. By combining traditional endoscopic views into the lung with computer-assisted navigation based on 3-D models of the patient’s lung anatomy, Monarch delivers continuous bronchoscope vision throughout the entire procedure.
